Mercedes C-class Estate (2007): first official pictures

About time the C-class Estate turned up…

It is, and while the new C-class saloon has only been around for six months, it’s so good that the old outgoing estate that's been soldiering on has suddenly been left feeling very long in the tooth. Merc has responded - and today presents the new estate. It’ll be shown in the metal at September’s Frankfurt Motor Show and then go on sale in the UK in summer 2008.
Inside, inside, tell us what’s inside!

A lot of space. The old car could hold 470 litres with the rear seats in place, or 1354 with them folded. The new C-class Estate increases this to 485 and 1500 litres, respectively. That comfortably beats the BMW 3-series’ 460 and 1385 litres. The one challenger the C-class may have is the new A4. The boot in Audi’s recently revealed saloon is 480 litres, beating the Merc saloon by five, so expect the A4 Avant to be equally cavernous. Of course, if you want a proper estate, rather than a posing exec lifestyle one, you'll find plenty of rivals such as the Volvo V70 whose boots will make a mockery of these German wagons'.

Citroen C-Cactus (2007): first official pictures

Citroen C-Cactus: the lowdown

Get the prickly jokes out of the way now; Citroen is deadly serious about its new C-Cactus. Its risible name was apparently picked - groan - because it's low on consumption like the spiky desert plant... Yes, it's yet another green concept cars games, designed to showcase a company's commitment to saving the planet. But look past the silly name and you can see some good thinking from the Citroen design team in Paris. It all adds up to a car the same size as a C4, but capable of a parsimonious 97.4 miles on every gallon of diesel.
Eighty-three miles per gallon. That's good!

It certainly is. PSA is developing a hybrid system for launch in the 308/C4 by the end of the decade. And, unlike the Japanese, the French are allying their electric motors with diesel engines, not petrols. Citroen won't say yet which engine is in the 70bhp C-Cactus, but we suspect it's the 1.4. Previous concepts have used the 110bhp 1.6 HDI, but as the two engines are related it looks as if PSA is investigating hybrid versions of both. As well as 97.4mpg and the ability to run on electric only power for short bursts around town, the C-Cactus pumps out a paltry 78g/km of CO2. Perfect for trimming your tax bills.

Ford Kuga (2007): first official pictures

The new Ford Kuga... the concept, the design sketch, the wait. Is this finally the real thing?

Yes it is. After a concept car, and then sketches of the production car, this is the real production car. And it will be unveiled at this month’s Frankfurt Motor Show, alongside the Verve concept (the next Fiesta). The Kuga will be made at Ford’s Saarlouis plant in Germany, but won’t go on sale in the UK until May 2008. But don’t fret, because in that time this car’s rather stunning looks won’t change one bit.
The Kuga still looks rather different from the Iosis X concept though?

That it does, but were you really expecting it to look the same? Then again, when the looks of your competition don’t exactly set the world alight then Ford could well be laughing all the way to the bank with its Kuga, and sell more than its predicted 60,000 per year. But Ford is very late to the SUV party, with offerings already available from the Japanese (Toyota, Honda, and Nissan). The Europeans have also recently got in on the act with Vauxhall’s Antara, VW’s Tiguan, while Renault say there is a 90 percent chance that a production Koleos will appear at Frankfurt. And that’s not forgetting the PSA twins, the Peugeot 4007 and Citroen's C-Crosser.

Mercedes C63 AMG estate (2007): first official pictures

The Mercedes C63 AMG estate looks nice then…

That is does, being better resolved and (slightly) more understated than the saloon. But don’t for one moment let the big boot fool you, because this car has 451bhp and 443lb ft. The C63’s 6.2-litre V8 is a great engine and it will rocket Mercedes’ latest load-lugger from rest to 62mph in 4.6 seconds.
Specs please…

All that power is transmitted to the road by AMG’s Speedshift Plus 7G-Tronic gearbox. It comes with steering wheel paddles and you can also choose between three driving modes: Comfort, Sport and Manual. On the Continent prices will start at €69,853 (£47,115) so expect it to be £50k by the time it reaches UK shores at the beginning of 2008.

Audi RS6 Avant (2007) unveiled

Right, I want numbers

Impatient? Well we are too, having snapped the RS6 Avant testing at the Nurburgring earlier this year, and knowing how good the RS4 is. So, without further ado… The headline figure is 571bhp. Yes, 571 horses, so if you thought the German horsepower race was slowing down you were very much mistaken, as today Mercedes has also unleashed its C63 AMG estate, detuned to 451bhp. The rest of the numbers are 479lb ft, €101,750 (£68,656) on the Continent, 0-62mph in 4.6 seconds, a limited top speed of 155mph and a kerbweight of 2025kg. Oh, and 1660 litres of boot space with the rear seats down.
But it looks understated?

At first glance, yes, but when you clock it in your rear-view mirror you’ll notice the subtly sculpted front bumper and LED daytime running lights. As the RS6 Avant passes you, and if you’re quick, you’ll pick out the bigger wheels and the chunky, flared wheel arches reminiscent of the old Ur-quattro. And, once it’s passed you, watch the two oval exhausts disappearing into the distance, and only then realise that it was an estate. Yes, it was that fast. Standard are 19-inch wheels, though you can specify 20-inch wheels. Only with the larger wheels can you have the ceramic brake option: they’re as impressive as the engine’s outputs, with 420mm discs up front, and 356mm discs at the rear. Also on the options list is a sports exhaust and a three-stage magnetic damping system.

Seat Tribu concept (2007): first official pictures

That colour is Seat, but that’s not the swooping Seat design I know

That’s exactly what Seat wants you to think. This is the first car designed by Luc Donckerwolke and, like the Salsa concept shown in 2000, it previews Seat’s future design direction. And in case you’re already having doubts, just remember that Mr Donckerwolke is the dab hand behind such automotive delights such as the Lamborghini Murcielago and Gallardo. This is the Tribu concept car, and CAR Online has obtained these pictures from a SEAT insider ahead of the car’s official debut next week. The design is much more angular than that on current Seats. However, it is still recognisably a Spanish product.
So tell me about the Tribu

Up front there are trapezoid-shaped headlights and air intakes. The windscreen and panoramic roof are one giant piece of glass letting lots of light into the cabin. And just visible in these pictures are the four individual bucket seats. What our pictures don’t show are the four screens, three of which display information relating to the selected driving mode: urban, sport or 'freerun' (that's off-roading to you and me). The car’s electronics adapt accordingly and adjust the engine, suspension and gearbox to suit city, motorway, or dirt-track driving. The rear light clusters are hidden below the darkened glass boot lid, and are only visible when the lights are illuminated.

Aston Martin unleashes Vantage N400 and DB9 LM: first official pictures

Bit bright for an Aston…

Yes, this orange hue is somewhat retina-searing. But don’t worry because this limited edition V8 Vantage N400 is available in other colours. However, it is this Karussell Orange that gives a clue to what this V8 Vantage is all about. It’s built to commemorate Aston’s achievements at the Nurburgring, where the V8 Vantage N24 has competed for the past two years. The Karussell is one of the most famous, and challenging, corners at the ‘Ring. But the N400 is no stripped out racer because it comes as standard with sat-nav, cruise control and heated electrical seats. Don’t fret, because there’s also a 400bhp 4.3-litre V8 under the bonnet, plus a Sport Pack that should filter down to the rest of the range soon. The Sports Pack comes with uprated springs and dampers, a new rear anti-roll bar, plus lightweight alloy wheels. Just 480 will be made, half as coupes and half as roadsters. Why 480? Because that’s how many seconds there are in eight minutes. And it’s the eight minute barrier that the N400 has just dipped below while lapping the ‘Ring. The car is available with an auto or manual gearbox and prices should start from £92,000.
That’s more restrained…

This is the DB9 LM and it is a lot more reserved than the tangerine-coloured V8 N400. This car is built to celebrate Aston’s victory in the GT1 class earlier this year at Le Mans. It comes as standard with the DB9’s Sports Pack. The rest of the changes are purely cosmetic, including a smoked-chrome mesh grille, red brake calipers, unique interior trimmings and the aptly named Sarthe Silver paint. Aston will build 124 DB9 LMs because it finished first at a 24-hour race. Hence 1-24, 124… and yours for £124,000… Both cars will be unveiled next week at the Frankfurt Motor Show, but if this DB9 isn't your thing then remember Aston Martin will also be showing the stunning DBS on its Frankfurt stand, and that’s the sort of DB9 we want.

Kia Kee concept (2007): first official pictures

Kee, huh? So what bad puns have you come up with?

Just the one: this is a key car for Kia. But whatever bad jokes we make the Korean manufacturer openly admits to this play on words. Why? Because this 2+2 coupe previews Kia’s design language for the next decade. The Kee’s design was overseen by Peter Schreyer, the man behind the original Audi TT, and Kia’s coupe just betters the current TT in all its dimensions. It’s 147mm longer, 37mm lower and 18mm wider. The Kee is powered by a 2.7-litre V6, and the 197bhp output is exactly the same as the base TT’s 2.0-litre turbocharged engine. This car is so close to the TT's recipe, it makes you wonder...
A coincidence?

Not a bit of it. The coupe market has grown massively since the first TT, and not only is Kia looking to capitalise on such growth, but it wants the Kee to emulate the success that Audi has had with the TT. And it wasn’t just sales of the TT that did Audi favours either. The TT helped make the Audi brand what it is today. That’s what the Kee could do for Kia, what Peugeot hope the 308 RC Z will do for them, and what the Tango roadster would have done for Seat had that car been put into production. Kia wishes to be viewed, in the company’s own words, as ‘exciting, appealing, creative, aspirational, with products that are beautiful and yet functional, purposeful and realistic’. Thus Kia needs the Kee: it’s a great-looking little 2+2.

Mercedes-Benz F700 concept: first official pictures

So, another big lumbering Mercedes saloon then?

Not a bit of it. Although the F700 might be 5.17m long – somewhere between the S-class and long-wheelbase S-class – the F700 is supposedly cleaner and more frugal than any current S-class. This is thanks to its innovative ‘Diesotto’ engine. The F700 also features a hybrid drive and suspension that reads the road ahead. And, for those who are familiar with the online world Second Life, there's an avatar too.
Diesotto? Sounds like a mix of diesel and the Otto cycle...

Bingo. That’s just what this engine is. The F700 has a 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine that is supposed to combine the low emissions of a petrol engine with the consumption of a diesel. With the Diesotto engine, this very large F700 manages 55.3mpg and emits just 127g/km of the dirty stuff. But don't think this engine lacks power, as there are two sequential turbochargers, plus a hybrid system to assist when the car moves off. The hybrid system allows stop/start running. There's also direction injection, variable valve lift and a variable crank. This crank allows for the especially clever bit: the ignition. Running on conventional petrol, the Diesotto engine operates with spark ignition under start-up and full loads, but under partial loads (low and medium speeds) it switches to diesel-style compression ignition. Mercedes calls this controlled auto ignition (CAI) and it means lower operating temperatures. This in turn means fewer nitrogen oxide emissions, while a three-way catalytic converter mops up the rest. The Diesotto engine makes 235bhp and 295lb ft, and the electric motor adds another 20bhp. This means a 0-62mph time of 7.5 seconds, and the aforementioned impressive consumption and emission figures. And not only is the engine very clean and efficient, but because it's smaller and lighter, it helps the F700 weigh 1700kg, whereas a base S280 is 1880kg.

Lamborghini Reventon (2007): first official pictures

What’s this? It looks like a Murcielago auditioning for the Batmobile!

It’s actually the Lamborghini Reventon, a €1m special of which only 20 will be built. Named after a particularly feisty bull that killed bullfighter Felix Guzman in 1943, the Reventon features a 6.5-litre V12 producing 650bhp – just 10bhp up on the standard car games with which it shares its four-wheel drive mechanicals. Think of it as Lamborghini’s take on the Ferrari Enzo-based FXX – an extremely low-volume machine for those who find ultimate supercars a little too common. Unlike the FXX, however, the Reventon is built for the road.
So it’s a Murcielago with a bodykit, then?

Not quite. However, it is the styling that’s most notable here, the Reventon looking something like a high-speed collision between a stealth fighter jet and the Murcielago LP640. Designed in-house by Lamborghini’s Centro Stile, the Reventon’s body is made, like the LP640, of CFC, a composite carbon material that’s both light and strong. High-tech aviation has been the main inspiration, hence the new, milled-from-aluminium filler cap and a flat green/grey paint scheme that suggests radar-evading properties – though we wouldn’t want to tempt fate.

Audi A7 Sportback (2010) first official pictures

This is the new Audi A7 Sportback, a sleek hatchback designed to take on the next-generation Mercedes CLS and the forthcoming BMW Gran Coupe. It’s a bigger brother to the already established A5 Sportback, and underneath the five-door skin is the same platform that will underpin next year’s more sedate A6 saloon.
So just what is the Audi A7 Sportback?

Audi claims the A7 Sportback offers the sporty elegance of a coupe, the comfort of a sedan and the practicality of an estate, though if you just want either of the last two an A6 saloon and Avant based on the same platform will appear in 2011.

Essentially, the Sportback is a sharper, sexier version of the more mundane A6, something a little more outlandish to appeal to company execs fed up with humdrum saloons. Mercedes’ first CLS was such a success that both BMW and Audi have followed suit, and the latter will add the A5 Sportback’s hatchback boot to its repertoire. It gives the A7 quite a frumpy rear three-quarter view, and while the rest of the design is generic Audi, it's definitely better than the A4-aping A8.

The interior offers our first glimpse at Audi's new swoopy interior styling, and the A7 is the first car from Ingolstadt to boast a head-up display. Other extras include a 1300W B&O stereo, and a Park Assist System that 'relieves the driver of the chore of steering while parallel parking'. Yes, having to steer your own car is such a bore.
What’s under the bonnet?

The A7 Sportback will initially go on sale with a choice all four engines, two petrol and two diesels V6, all with direct injection, an energy recuperation system and stop/start tech.

Mini to return to the WRC in 2011 with 4x4

Mini is back in rallying, more than 50 years after it ruled the roost at Monte Carlo and beyond, giving a huge shot in the arm to the World Rally Championship.

In typically audacious style BMW has announced it will campaign the Countryman SUV rather than the standard Mini, starting with selected WRC rounds in 2011 followed by the entire 2012 season.
It’s also a return to WRC for Banbury-based Prodrive, the outfit behind Subaru’s legendary WRC success, who will develop the car and run the team. Prodrive last campaigned in the 2008 season, and have been developing the Countryman since early 2009.

The car is based on the production Countryman, and will run the BMW Motorsport 1.6-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged engine, to comply with the new Super2000 regulations. Being an SUV, it will also have four-wheel drive – ironically the only car in the field to do so.

Prodrive boss Dave Richards says: ‘This very exciting. I believe the Countryman will become a firm favourite with the latest generation of rally fans.’
BMW board member Ian Robertson thinks the Mini Countryman is perfect for the job: ‘It provides an excellent basis from which to create a competitive racing car for the world championship,’ he says. ‘I am convinced we will add a few more chapters to our success story in rallying.’

The Countryman WRC will also be available for customer teams, and Richards confirms that several orders have already been placed. The car starts testing in the autumn.

Abarth 695 Tributo Ferrari: the £30k Fiat 500 is here

Hot on the heels of the Aston Martin Cygnet as the most unlikely badge to find on a city cars games is this: the Abarth 695 Tributo Ferrari.

The prancing Shetland pony was today confirmed for UK sale – and it's going to cost the thick end of £30k. That's right: 30 big ones...

Abarth 695 Tributo Ferrari: just a pumped-up Fiat 500?

You got it. Essentially, a breathed-on and fettled Fiat 500 1.4 turbo, the 695 offers a select few buyers a little more exclusivity over those who shunned the Mini for the basic 500. It also has the potential to be more exclusive than the much-talked-about Aston Martin Cygnet, with just 152 RHD examples of the Abarth set to reach Britain.

However as is often the case, exclusivity comes at a price – £29,600 to be precise. Before you scoff at this, for your nigh on £30k, you will get a Ferrari-inspired exterior with carbon door mirrors as well as Corsa Grey alloy wheels and intake vents.

But is it any quicker? It has got a Ferrari badge...

In addition to the glamorised exterior, the 695 Tributo gains an additional 20bhp over the standard 500 Abarth esseesse, which shares the same 1.4 turbocharged motor. There's a variable pressure sports exhaust which changes the engine sound over a certain rev limit, for that authentic Ferrari experience. To cope with this hike in power, the 695 also sprouts uprated suspension, tyres and 284mm Brembo front brakes.

Inside has also been subject to a makeover of exotica proportions, with the little Fiat gaining paddleshift, leather-clad bucket seats and aluminium pedals. Mounted behind the steering wheel are the paddles for the ‘Abarth Competizione’ gearbox which features both manual and auto modes.

Fiat, it seems, is confident the car will receive a warm welcome when the few examples go on sale over here. 'Abarth and Ferrari are both iconic names in Italian automotive history,' says Ivan Gibson, head of Abarth in the UK. 'Their passion and dedication helped to create a reputation for sporting excellence in Italian cars around the world, and this new Abarth 695 Tributo Ferrari upholds that tradition with some style.'

Hmm. One of the most brazen bits of badge engineering in recent memory!

If you have £30k to spend and would like one, the 695 Tributo Ferrari is available for special order now through any of Fiat's 17 Abarth dealer network. If you don’t have that kind of money to splash on a tarted-up supermini, a Ferrari cap is around £16.85 from Ferrari stores and will have a similar effect on your personal life.

Nissan X-Trail: news and photos of 2010 facelift

The most inconspicuous facelift award could be a hotly contested category if it existed. Vying for contention, for a second successive generation, would be this: the Nissan X-Trail.

Over its 10-year cycle on the roads of Britain, the X-Trail has been subjected a minor nip-tuck facelift and even a complete makeover in 2007. Nissan assured us they had replaced every panel on the mid-sized off-roader, but we'll forgive you if you didn't notice the change.
What’s supposedly new now on the 2010 X-Trail?

The newly facelifted 2010 Nissan X-Trail has received refreshed exterior and interior details, as well as a host of minor mechanical and aerodynamic alterations. The front end is most heavily altered: with a completely redesigned grille, headlights and bumpers, the nose is noticeably different.

Meanwhile, the rear of the car has also scrubbed-up, with LED daytime running lights out the back. The bit in the middle hasn’t been forgotten either, with the X-Trail gaining larger diameter wheels and bigger wheelarches to accommodate those rims.
What's new inside the 2010 X-Trail?

Not only has the X-Trail had a thorough Botox session outside, its innards have also recieved a refresh. Nissan has changed the plastics used on the dash and switchgear to give a more pleasing texture, as well as softer fabrics for the cloth seats. Higher up the range, pricier models gain leather with revised stitching for a more luxurious feel, while all models have fresh dial graphics.

The X-Trail also does its bit for the environment. The diesel variants are EU5 compliant, and the gear ratios and underbody aerodynamics have been tweaked to provide better returns across the range.
So, softer on the inside, harder on the outside? A bit like an armadillo?

In essence, yes, but the X-Trail has the added luxury of being able to take five passengers and luggage. Thanks to the added 10mm in overall length, the rear seat space has also been increased without intruding on the front.

The new X-Trail hits UK showrooms in October 2010 with customer deliveries beginning the same month.

Vauxhall reveals its line up for 2010 Paris motor show

The 2010 Mondial de l’Automobile – aka Paris motor show 2010 – is set to be the launchbed for a bevy of new models from the Vauxhall stable. The Paris show will see Vauxhall launch a three-door Astra GTC Paris concept car (the main news, but sadly no photos available yet), plus a clutch of other spin-offs.

There are new Meriva diesels, an Astra estate and the latest evolution of Ampera electric vehicle.

The three-door Vauxhall Astra GTC Paris concept car

Strangely for the launch of a concept car, Vauxhall has provided no real information or photographs of the GTC Paris. Such is the mindset at GM Europe these days, the brief confirmation statement claims that the GTC Paris is inspired by the line ‘and the speed was pure beauty’ from the novel, Jonathon Livingston Seagull. Emotive stuff. This theme continues inside with the phrase being laser etched into the front seats.

As far as the shape of the car goes, we are largely in the dark. However, it is said to don dramatic proportions and sculptural shapes that show the GTC Paris as an expressive, sporty compact hatch

Happily, CAR has already scooped the three-door Astra GTC and we've handily reproduced our spy shot of the Astra coupé above. What will be shown at Paris is a very-near production version of the car, which will go on sale in early 2012.

Vauxhall Ampera: the latest news

Vauxhall will also unveil the latest evolution of the already much-hyped Ampera ‘extended range’ electric vehicle that is set to go on sale in 2012. The latest Ampera, which bears more than a passing resemblance to the Honda FCX Clarity, boasts an impressive range of 350 miles.

This is due, in part, to the petrol driven generator on board that provides electricity to the drive unit, whilst also maintains battery charge for use around town. The GM Voltec system helps eliminate ‘range anxiety’ for those who feel they cannot conquer the world 40 miles at a time.

With 273 lb ft of torque and the equivalent of around 148bhp being delivered, the 0-60 dash is dispatched in around 9.0 seconds. Combined with a healthy load capacity and seating for four, it helps establish the Ampera as a genuinely well rounded car.

The Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer is here

Moving away from future fiction to gritty here-and-now, it would seem Vauxhall is keen to push the ‘Britishness’ of the expanding Astra range. The new Sports Tourer was penned by British chief European designer Mark Adams’ design team and is set to be built solely at Ellesmere Port after being engineered largely at GM's facility in Bedfordshire, UK.

Set to arrive in showrooms in October 2010, the Astra estate boasts most things you’d expect from an estate: large (500-litre) boot capacity, one-touch split folding rear seats and cargo cover as well as more cubby holes than you can ever possibly find use for. The new Astra wagon also boasts the full range of tried and tested hatchback engines as well as featuring driving dynamics optimised for British roads.

Last and definitely least: some Meriva and Corsa news

Also starring on the stand in Paris, although in more of a supporting role, are the latest new Meriva diesel models, which complete the engine line-up for Vauxhall's small MPV. The two new diesels comprise a 1.3 CDTi which places an emphasis on low CO2 and high economy, whilst a second 1.7 CDTi offers frugality with a little added oomph, in the form of 221 lb ft of torque mated to a six-speed gearbox.

Finally, rounding off Vauxhall's new model assault is a Corsa, showcasing stop/start technology as a sign of the brand's commitment to lowering its CO2 emissions.

Land Rover Freelander 2: the official 2011 facelift

Efficiency, it seems, is the name of the game these days and Land Rover is no exception to playing the green card. With a new range of diesel engines and some sleeker style, the 2011 Freelander 2 is said to be more powerful and efficient than the outgoing model.
Land Rover Freelander goes front-wheel drive

First there was the FWD Evoque. Now the Freelander is following suit. This new 2011 model uses the latest 2.2-litre EU5 friendly diesel engine that's both quieter and smoother than the one it replaces, says Land Rover.

Manual models add a more efficient and versatile stop/start system, creating a Freelander that can achieve a claimed minimum of 40mpg on the combined cycle.

The range-topping 187bhp SD4 will hit a very respectable 40.4mpg combined, whilst the more frugal variants in the range will see up to 45.4mpg. If you fancy all the bulk of an off-roader without the complexity of a 4wd system, the 148bhp eD4 2wd version will return you 47mpg on the combined cycle. Not bad for a car tipping the scales at over 1700kg.

This brings the Freelander's CO2 emissions tumbling to as low as 158g/km on the eco-tweaked eD4. That's enough to make it the most efficient Land Rover ever produced.

Despite the reductions in both economy and emissions, the 2011 Freelander 2 has not had its performance neutered, with torque levels rising by around 15lb ft across the range making for more efficient towing and performance.
What else is there to tempt me to guilt-free off-roader ownership?

Outside, the obligatory facelift has brought with it new bumper mouldings and slight changes to details. The lights receive new surrounds and finishes, as do the door and boot handles. The new, sleeker nose is especially handsome.

Inside, new seat and dashboard finishes are added, alongside a new dial layout to bring the interior up to date, whilst the new ‘premium pack’ brings electric seats to the party. The Freelander 2 retains the outgoing car's safety features, boasting seven airbags and the all-important five-star Euro NCAP rating.
So what is the price of this improved, gluten-free Freelander 2?

When the Freelander 2 goes on sale in late September 2010, prices are set to start at £21,695 for the entry level TD4 S, rising to £35,510 for the range topping SD4 HSE model, making it more than comparable with BMW’s X3.

McLaren reveals new London dealership

So where’s the posh new London dealership for the new McLaren MP4-12C? Just a stone’s throw from the old Park Lane McLaren site, it's emerged.

One Hyde Park is the new home for the company in the UK’s capital city, and McLaren predicts that the flagship London store will be the busiest of the planned global outlets for the MP4-12C supercar, thanks mainly to the prime Knightsbridge location.

The new London showroom also plays on McLaren’s strong ties to F1, and it will have the team’s GP cars on constant display alongside the road cars.
McLaren dealership at One Hyde Park

'One Hyde Park has already established itself as a landmark location in London,’ said Christian Marti, McLaren Automotive’s European regional director. 'We are both proud and excited to be part of its future success. The McLaren London showroom at One Hyde Park will represent everything we strive for at McLaren: great attention to detail, form and function in its visual impact and atmosphere, and a focus on the customers’ requirements.’

Run by the Jardine Motors Group, the London dealer will open in early 2011 ahead of a spring 2011 launch of the 12C. Another 24 outlets are planned across the globe, with showrooms in Birmingham and Manchester, and with other retailers located throughout Europe, the Middle and Far East, as well as the US and Canada.

Prices of the MP4-12C have yet to be confirmed – CAR predicts around £170,000 – but over 2700 potential customers have expressed a ‘serious intention to buy’ to McLaren.

Jaguar XJ75 Platinum Concept (2010) first pictures

Jaguar showed off a bespoke XJ at this weekend's Pebble Beach concours d'elegance. The XJ75 Platinum Concept is the latest in a string of 75th anniversary show cars and is designed to demonstrate 'the design customisation potential' of the latest XJ - hinting at further derivatives to follow.

What, you mean a new Jaguar XJR?

Well, that's one interpretation. The XJ75 Platinum is based on the 464bhp 5.0-litre V8 XJL Supercharged (a US market trim with fewer horses than the full-fat UK 503bhp edition Supercharged) but adds lower front, rear and side trim panels and 22in wheels. It's finished in satin matte pearlescent white and all the exterior chrome has been dulled to darker chrome or gloss black.

Inside gets a thorough makeover with similar pearlescent white air vents, veneers and diamond stitch suede inserts on the seats and headlining.

Sounds a bit bling to me...

Some of it might be a bit tuner-spec, but there's a delicious horological detail in the new Bremont clock.

The designers speak

'From a pure design perspective, the XJ75 Platinum Concept is foremost about emphasising the striking proportion and presence of the new XJ, with a distilled black and white theme, which conjures up the sense of precious platinum,' said Jaguar XJ chief designer Giles Taylor. 'At the same time, the pure sporting character of XJ is brought to the fore by keeping the car's clean graphic approach and further lowering its stance.

'On the inside, we played up the XJ's combination of high-end materials and British flair to really have some fun. The XJ75 Platinum Concept is a design exercise that shows our vision of customisation as an inspiration for those enthusiasts who have a taste for strong individuality and visual confidence in their luxury automobiles.'

Morgan Eva GT (2012) first official pictures

This is the Morgan Eva GT, a brand new sports car games that the Malvern-based manufacturer will start building in 2012. Unveiled at the 2010 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, the Eva GT is built around a variation of the aluminium chassis used in the Aero Supersports and is powered by a twin-turbo BMW straight six.
So if the Morgan Eva GT isn’t out until 2012, is it too early for technical details?

Not at all, as Morgan is already taking £5000 deposits and offering up all the information it has to encourage potential customers to put an order in. The underpinnings are a development of the bonded aluminium chassis from the Aero Supersports, while the voluptuous bodywork is aluminium too – the lightweight platform and body helps keep the kerbweight to just 1250kg.

Power comes courtesy of a BMW-sourced twin-turbo 3.0-litre straight six. The engine produces 302bhp and 295lb ft, and drives the rear wheels via a six-speed manual or automatic gearbox. And with the low weight, Morgan is currently reckoning on a 4.5 second run to 62mph, but also 40mpg and 200g/km.
So if it’s ‘only’ got six cylinders, presumably it sits below the Aero Supersports?

That’s right, but above the rest of Morgan’s range. Morgan sees it as a ‘practical car’ that can be used everyday, with a big boot, plus two large doors allowing easy access to the two seats in the back. And to make it usable there’s power steering, ABS brakes and ESP, plus xenon lights, electric windows and airbags, and Morgan claims the Eva GT will meet the latest US and European safety standards.

If you fancy an Eva GT then Morgan will take a £5000 deposit off you now, with the promise of building your car from mid-2012. Expect prices to start north of £70k.

Infiniti G Coupe IPL (2010) first pictures

Infiniti has unveiled its first IPL (or Infiniti Performance Line) package, a sports-focussed trim upgrade for the G37 Coupe. Think of the IPL pack as the equivalent of BMW’s M Sport or Audi’s S-line kits, and if it proves popular, there’ll be more kits (and even bespoke cars) to come.
So Infiniti Performance Line is an M Division rival?

No, not yet – everything is still in the very early stages of development. But rather than follow Lexus’s example (launch a bespoke car, the ISF, followed by F Sport kits later) Infiniti is launching the much cheaper sporting upgrades first. If it proves popular (and if the economy improves too) then we’ll see IPL upgrades available for other Infinitis. And if company bosses can make the numbers work, we’ve heard from Infiniti sources that it would be keen to expand IPL to build sports cars to rival M, S and RS and AMG models.

'IPL was conceived to create a new premium performance envelope, going beyond equipment upgrades to accelerate the very soul of Infiniti’s Inspired Performance,' said Infiniti vice president Ben Poore. 'IPL brings all the elements together, styling harmonized with performance, exhaust note with acceleration feel, ride comfort and confident handling. It’s the perfect formula for unmatched driving exhilaration.'
Fair enough, but how does Infiniti’s very first IPL package stack up?

Infiniti has unveiled its first IPL kit for its most sporting car, the G37 Coupe. There are new front and rear bumpers, black surrounds for the fog lights, more sculpted side sills, a little rear spoiler and some chrome-tipped exhausts. Inside there are more supportive front seats.

The IPL kit isn’t just about the visuals though. An ECU tweak has added an extra 18bhp for a total of 343bhp (400rpm further up the rev range, at 7400rpm), along with 276lb ft (up 6lb ft). A new exhaust helps reduce back pressure, adding some extra noise as well, and the IPL G Coupe also features 19-inch alloys and performance-focussed Bridgestone tyres. Finally, the front and rear springs have been stiffened up, the shocks absorbers have been adjusted, the steering is sharper, there are upgraded brakes and a rear ‘diff.

Prices for the IPL kit have yet to be announced, and currently the package is only available in North America, though availability for other markets is under consideration.

Toyota NS4 concept car (2012) first official pictures

21 December 2011 09:45

Toyota regularly shows hybrid concept cars at the Detroit auto show – and the 2012 NAIAS is no different. Problem is, we don't yet know much about their planned debut.

Called the NS4, all we can see so far is this rather ludicrously cropped shot of the headlamp. We nearly didn't bother publishing this at all, but figured you'd rather see a snippet of the Toyota NS4 rather than nothing.

The brief statement issued today says: 'Toyota Motor Sales USA Inc will debut NS4, an advanced plug-in hybrid concept vehicle, at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

'The reveal will feature the world premiere of the concept vehicle as well as the North American debut of the Prius C hybrid during Toyota's news conference on Tuesday 10 January at 8.45am in the Riverview Ballroom at Cobo Center.'

Lexus LF-Lc concept car (2012) is leaked early

A concept depicting what a future Lexus SC could look like has leaked early. The new Lexus LF-Lc will be shown at the 2012 Detroit auto show in January.

Road & Track magazine in the US is being blamed for the leak, which has provided this low-res image of the LF-Lc.

It shows a sporting targa coupe and officials openly refer to it as a design study in the mould of the rare SC convertible, a kind of Merc SL from Japan.
Lexus LF-Lc: the lowdown

Pay attention to the styling of the LF-Lc. Lexus types admit it is exploring a fresh design expression for the company; although it persists with the L-Finesse design language, this shows a modest progression.

The spindle grille, in particular, is said to be influential - taking the new-look snout from the GS and giving it a fresh twist. It fronts up a massively elongated bonnet, with cartoonish proportions.
Another hybrid Lexus

Naturally, that long, long bonnet houses a hybrid powertrain. No word yet on its specification.

Will Lexus build this targa-top sports car? They must be feeling buoyed by the reception for its LF-A supercar, but we suspect the LF-Lc won't be at the top of their priority list.

Audi A1 Quattro (2012) first official pictures

This is the Audi A1 Quattro, a 252bhp and four-wheel drive hot hatch that’s as exclusive as an R8 GT Spyder. Just 333 Audi A1 Quattros will ever be built so they’ll be a rare sight on the road – and particularly in Britain as the entire production run is left-hand drive, and Audi UK will import a tiny number only if there’s enough customer interest.
So I probably can’t afford an Audi A1 Quattro, and I might never see one – what am I missing out on?

Let’s talk power. Shoehorned under the bonnet is a direct injection 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, dressed with a turbocharger to produce 252bhp (at 6000rpm) and 258lb ft (from 2500 to 4500rpm). Thankfully the A1 Quattro has Quattro (hence the name), and previews the new four-wheel drive system that Audi is developing for the forthcoming circa-220bhp S1.

With all four wheels pawing at the Tarmac, 0-62mph takes 5.7 seconds, 1.2 seconds quicker than the current 182bhp (and front-wheel drive) A1 1.4 TFSI. Top speed is 152mph and it’ll do 32.8mpg on the combined fuel cycle.
It’s got a double-clutch S-tronic gearbox, hasn’t it?

Actually it hasn’t. The prototype four-wheel drive A1 we tested earlier this year had a six-speed manual, and so does this production A1 Quattro. And enthusiasts should also like the sound of the chassis tweaks: Audi promises this limited-run A1 ‘is much more tautly tuned than the production model’.

Those are changes below the skin though; much more obvious is Glacier White paint (the only colour available) the deep front bumper (that mainly comprises intakes rather than any actual metalwork), red-tinted headlights, sill extensions, twin exhaust pipes, the big rear wing and white alloy wheels. There are 225/35 R18 tyres all round, 312mm front brakes clamped by black callipers, and a three-stage ESP system with a Sport mode and a you’re-on-your-own setting. Inside there’s a red rev counter, and red stitching to contrast with the black Nappa leather.

The first customer cars will be delivered in the second half of 2012, and if you want to own one in the UK, start waving at least £30k in the face of your Audi dealer now.

Range Rover Evoque by Kahn (2012) first pictures

It was only a matter of time before the tuning world got their hands on the modish new Range Rover Evoque.

Yorkshire fettlers Kahn have just announced their take on the Evoque: new paint colours, huge rims and a range of personalisation to make you stand out from the Chelsea set.
What Kahn do to the Range Rover Evoque

A. Kahn Design in Bradford takes the Evoque and produces whatever the customer's taste - and wallet - allow.

This example sports a 35mm suspension drop to give the Evoque a more ground-hugging stance. A variety of alloy wheels is offered, ranging from 20-22in in diameter.

But most of the changes to the Kahn Evoque are cosmetic: the brake callipers are yellow, the roof orange (very DS3 Racing), privacy glass is fitted and many of the details are colour-coded.
Upholstery to match your wardrobe

Kahn promises it can spec the Evoque's interior to match any customer's mores. They'll even match the seat upholstery to a buyer's favourite jeans or suit.

They'll even change the colour of the dashboard clock.

Much as we often deride the efforts of tuners, this new 2012 Range Rover Evoque by Kahn actually looks pretty smart to these eyes.

If anything, this Evoque is even nearer to the Land Rover LRX concept car games.

Lexus LF-Lc concept car (2012) first official pictures

Now it's official. After the leaked images of the Lexus LF-Lc broke early before Christmas, today Lexus issues more official photos of its SC-alike concept car.

The LF-Lc will be shown at the 2012 Detroit auto show, aka the North American International Auto Show, which kicks off next week.
Lexus LF-Lc: the lowdown

The LF-Lc is a 2+2 sports coupe designed to showcase the next iteration of Lexus design. Dubbed L-Finesse, the language of Lexus hasn't changed much in the past decade and this concept explores future stylistic avenues.

Designed at the company's Calty studio in Newport Beach, California, the LF-Lc 'combines high technology and organic shapes to connect the driver to the car,' say the chief creatives. 'The clean lines of the vehicle emphasize motion, creating a distinctive look for this futuristic sport coupe.'

Insiders talk about this car being built in the spirit of the SC, that rare-groove roadster which challenged the Mercedes SL.

The spindle grille, in particular, is said to be influential - taking the new-look snout from the GS and giving it a fresh twist. It fronts up a massively elongated bonnet, with cartoonish proportions for its hybrid powertrain.
